Exotic bird getting treated by vet

Winter Safety

Winter is fast approaching, and many owners have contacted us regarding us about how to transport their birds, reptiles and small animal to our office safely. It is never too dangerous to bring your pets to the vet in cold weather, particularly if you suspect your pet to be sick. Putting off a vet visit is never a good idea, especially with delicate species such as birds, reptiles and other small animals. Here are some tips on how to transport you bird, reptile or other small animal friends:

  1. Start by pre-heating your car before the visit. This will help reduce stress and the amount of time the pet could be potentially exposed to the cold.
  2. Transport your small bird, reptile or small mammal in an insulated environment such as a Styrofoam cooler to maintain heat. Make sure you drill a few small holes in the top or sides for ventilation. You may increase the temperature of an enclosure by placing a warm water bottle inside with your pet. Remember that birds may try and chew the bottle, so be sure to cover it with a towel or cloth.
  3. For larger birds and pocket pets, or, if you do not have an insulated carrier, place your pet in a small travel-safe carrier and swaddle the carrier in towels. Fleece works particularly well to protect carriers from wind while not blocking air supply.
